The first of four direct tickets to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar has already been booked in South America with five matches remaining. Runaway qualifying leader Brazil (1st, 34 points) mathematically clinched that berth with a home win against Colombia.

Argentina (2nd, 28 points) moved one step closer to joining its rival at the big dance with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Uruguay (6th, 16 points). The Argentines could then lock up its spot at home against Brazil in a must-watch match on Nov. 16.

Ecuador (3rd, 20 points) grabbed control of the third spot after its home win on Matchday 13, but the scrap for 4th and 5th place (5th place earns a spot in a playoff) is only intensifying with four teams within two points.

There’s a three-way tie on 16 points involving Chile, Colombia and Uruguay. By virtue of its 1-0 win in Paraguay, Chile (4th, 16 points) incredibly finds itself in a qualifying position after its prospects looked bleak only a couple of months ago.

The hopes of Peru (7th, 14 points) were revived after a massive home win against Bolivia (9th, 12 points), which will hope to get back in the qualifying mix with a home match on Tuesday that kicks off that day’s slate.

How CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying works

It’s not complicated in South America. All 10 nations play in a round-robin format with each country playing the other nine teams at home and away (total of 18 matches). It’s three points for a win, one for a draw and zero for every loss.

After 18 matches, the top four teams in the standings qualify directly to Qatar 2022, while the fifth-place team will advance to an intercontinental playoff with a ticket to Qatar on the line.
