Jeff Nahill’s Del Mar opinions for Friday, July 16 (Opening day) – The San Diego Union-Tribune

FIRST RACE: 1-7-2-4

SECOND RACE: 10-1-4-5

Everyone knows trainer Bob Baffert is deadly with 2-year-old firsters but did you know he’s 0-for-10 with debuting maiden claimers like #4 Midnight Mammouth? Now many people don’t consider this a claimer since it has a $150,000 price tag on every horse but the purse is only $50,000 and I think Del Mar MSW will be more than $70k this meet so it’s a step below. Midnight has good works, but I’ll pass on win end.

THIRD RACE: 3-8-6-7

FOURTH RACE: 1-7-10-4

Keep this in mind for the meet; trainer Peter Miller started a number of 2-year-olds at Gulfstream Park this spring and has shipped them to Del Mar for the Ship ‘N Win program #1 Don’t Ju Forget fits the mold. These horses have a race under their belt which can’t hurt in juvenile races.

FIFTH RACE: 8-6-12-2

SIXTH RACE: 10-12-4-8

SEVENTH RACE: 5-2-9-6

EIGHTH RACE: 3-1-4-10

NINTH RACE: 3-13-6-8 (best bet)

10TH RACE: 7-2-8-6

Good luck. Stay safe.

Jeff Nahill’s Del Mar spot play

After a hiatus, I am back with the daily spot play. Going to do things a little different this summer. I will have a daily selection but I will also have a season long play that will happen when the situation arises (even after scratches or jockey changes).

Today’s play: Trainer Peter Miller has won so many Del Mar training titles that I’ve lost track and he likes to start fast. He has nine horses entered for opening day. In the second race, bet $3 to win on #5 and #10 plus bet a $2 exacta box 5-10; in the third bet $5 on #3; in the fourth bet $5 to win on #1; in the seventh bet $3 to win on #4 and #6 play a $2 exacta box 4-6; in the eighth bet $3 to win on #6 and #9 plus a $2 exacta box 6-9; and in the ninth bet $5 to win on None Above the Law. Total bets: $35.

Season long play: Last summer, jockeys Umberto Rispoli (114-35-18-11) and Flavien Prat (105-21-23-7) absolutely dominated on the Del Mar turf course, especially going two turns or more. The play this summer is a $5 exacta box whenever Rispoli and Prat have mounts going a mile or longer on the grass. Today’s plays: In the third race, #3 and #8; in the fifth race #6 and #8; and in the ninth race #3 and #13. Total bets: $30.

The other season long play is trainer Bob Baffert when he has two horses entered in the same. The play has been to bet on the “other” Baffert in these cases or in other words bet the horse with the longer odds and also play an exacta box. In today’s eighth race, I will bet $6 on either #1 Saville Row (4-1) or #3 Freedom Fighter (7-2), whichever ends up with the higher odds, and a $2 exacta box of 1-3. Total bets: $10.

Today’s total wagers: $75

Good luck. Stay safe.
