SAN DIEGO – The UConn baseball team (13-3) hung on for 8-7 win against UC San Diego on Saturday night at Triton Ballpark.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, left-hander Garrett Coe struck out Emiliano Gonzalez to secure the series opener.
The Huskies hit a season-high four home runs including a pair of home runs for David Smith. The UConn second baseman’s two-run shot in the second was his first career home run as a Husky.
Smith gave the Huskies a 3-2 lead with his solo shot in the fifth inning.
UConn extended its lead in the seventh, 7-3, with back-to-back home runs from Casey Dana and T.C.Simmons.
Dana added a key insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning.
Austin Peterson earned his third victory of the year with 6.2 innings of work that featured five strikeouts
UConn will look to win its fourth-straight series with a game two matchup on Sunday, March 20 at 5 p.m. ET/ 2 p.m. PT
