MIDWEST CITY, Okla. — Miss Oklahoma Teen USA says a high schooler from Midwest City is the first with Down Syndrome to compete.
The first thing you notice about 17-year-old Courtney Gaines is her smile, but there’s a lot more to the bubbly teen than meets the eye.
Gaines is an active cheerleader and works as an ambassador for numerous organizations promoting change and success for people with disabilities and women of color.
“Oftentimes, we don’t see people of color that have disabilities, that’s very rare to see and to see them so active and outgoing,” Courtney’s mom DeAnna Gaines says, “She’s an advocate just by her being visually out there and doing things, showing that yes that she can do this.”
It’s work Courtney enjoys and is passionate about.
“I love pageants so much,” the teen told FOX23.
The competition for Miss Oklahoma Teen USA is set for the first week of June in Courtney’s hometown of Midwest City.
