No last-second heroics were required this time.
No game-winning drive to save a perfect season.
Carlsbad scored the first six times it had the ball and got a defensive score when Christian Sarem intercepted a screen pass and returned it 16 yards for a TD and the top-seeded Lancers put a licking on fourth-seeded Torrey Pines, beating the Falcons 44-7 in an Open Division semifinal.
The first time these teams played, Carlsbad needed an 80-yard drive and a last-play TD to beat Torrey Pines (6-4) 34-33.
With this win, Carlsbad (11-0) advances to Saturday’s championship game against Cathedral Catholic at 7 p.m. at Escondido High.
“We made some adjustments from that first game,” said Carlsbad linebacker Anthony Ferrelli, who had two sacks.
“The biggest adjustment was on the defensive line. In that first game, we missed nine tackles. This game is who we are.”
Carlsbad held the Falcons to 95 yards rushing on 25 carries 34 of those yards came on a fourth-quarter run by Alex Taylor. Torrey Pines threw for only 38 yards.
Torrey Pines had 14 plays of one yard or less.
Torrey Pines quarterback Remi Baere was sacked seven times, two Ferrelli, two by Cassius Murphy.
“There is a big difference when Torrey Pines is second-and-9 and not second-and-5,” Ferrelli said. “All the credit to our coaches. We made some major adjustments, switched packages, switched schemes.”
Paulo Burak, who didn’t play in the first game against Torrey Pines because of an ankle injury, had 14 carries for 138 yards and TD runs of 37 and 14 yards.
Carlsbad rushed for 222 yards with Matt Moore scoring on a 12-yard run.
Quarterback Julian Sayin completed 13 of 16 passes for 169 yards and TD strikes of 13 yards to Moore and 41 yards to Josh Davis.
“Our offense can really spread things around,” Burak said. “We have a lot of weapons.
“We had a week of great practices, smart practices. We have great leads on this team.
“I’m super excited about this win.”
Taylor led Torrey Pines with nine carries for 92 yards.
Easton Clements, who had 203 yards total offense and three TDs in the first game, didn’t play for Torrey Pines. He was out with a leg injury.
