  1. Heidi Vonblum hired as San Diego’s new housing director. She brings more than 12 years of experience working for the City of San Diego and was the director of deputy planning the past two years. “Providing homes and safe and enjoyable neighborhoods are so critical for our City’s growing population,” said Vonblum. “I am excited to continue to work with the Mayor and the entire Planning Department team to bring more homes to people in all communities, and to ensure that the infrastructure needed to support and improve the lives of all San Diegans is delivered efficiently and equitably.” (San Diego Community Newspaper Group)
  2. Body washes ashore for the second time in as many days in failed human smuggling attempt. A beachgoer noticed the body of a man in shallow water on a stretch of shoreline off the 5100 block of Voltaire Street at about 10 a.m. yesterday. “Emergency crews rescued two men from the sea following the accident, SDFRD spokesman Jose Ysea said. Another was able to make it to shore on his own, and a fourth, 37- year-old Mexican national Eleobardo Garcia Lopez, was found dead on the beach early Sunday.” (City News Service)
  3. San Diego officials applaud President Biden’s new “ghost gun” rules. Biden announced a crackdown of the unrelated firearms that lack serial numbers on Monday. “Today’s long-awaited rule change is a critical step in curbing the shocking rise in gun violence in our country, much of it fueled by the proliferation of ghost guns,” said Councilman von Wilpert, who wrote and helped pass the Eliminate Non-Serialized Untraceable Firearms ordinance in the city last year. The guns are typically assembled from unregulated components and many people, including minors, get around background checks by just purchasing the parts to assemble a working gun themselves. For those breaking the new law on ghost guns, Biden said “Not only are state and local prosecutors going to come after you, but expect federal charges and federal prosecution too,” (San Diego Patch)
